"Has anyone ever removed a gimbal housing and or transom plate without removing the engine? My manual says to pull the engine. All I really want to do is replace my gimbal ring with a good salvage part. I have a good bell housing/gimbal ring/gimbal housing assembly and I want to replace what I have with that. Or would it be easier to drill the sides of the exsisiting gimbal housing? By the way it's on a 1978 Sea Ray with a mercruiser 228, Thanks"
 
It can be done but it is not e

It can be done but it is not easier .The only good part you don't have to pull the engine.It can be tricky to remove the nut at the upper swivelshaft through the accessholes.Good luck.
