" I am haveing problems with my 1999 150 Merc. I ran the boat for about 45 min at various speeds without any problem. When I went to shift the boat out of neutral the engine sputtered and them stalled. It almost sounded like it was not getting gas. It took about 5 tries to start it and it ran OK except I could not get it up to speed. It seemed to run fine at 1500 rpm and it started right up 3 times after I shut it off and got it back to the dock. I'm planning on checking the plugs/wires and compression. Any suggestions for things to check? What should I look for if I'm going to run it so i won't hurt the engine?

I would check the stator thoroughly. I would need to know which stator you have in order to give you any useful information. The serial number of the engine might help, but the number stamped on the stator might be necessary.
