I have twin 1977 ford 351w engines in a Carver. I just changed the coils and resistors on both engines. One side no problem but the other heats up on the input side the minute you turn the ignition on. All wires were replaced as removed.
The differences between the 2 are:
The good side only has 2 wires in and 2 wires out
Bad side has 4 in and 2 out, one of them is a direct wire from a replacement alternator.
All worked fine before I changed the resistor.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting this please???

Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

many thanks "

Two questions: did you purchase ballast resisters for marine use or automotive use ? Are the ballast resisters mounted on a metal plate? Automotive styles are not sealed and if mounted improperly will short directly to the mount. Also check connections on the resister to make sure you are not bridging the wires.

I agree- I would go to the ignition conversion kit so points aren't an issue.

No points = happy boating.
