Reveiwing these boards I see

Reveiwing these boards I see alot of knowledgeable people. I have a 200hp 1989 Johnson. WhenI try and put it in reverse it sometimes comes out and sounds like the gears are not properly engaging clinking sound. I tried adjusting cable but is already back all the way. I removed the lower unit shift rod is properly sized 26 16/16 from gearcase to middle of hole. I was was told it may be the clutch dog. Is this a difficult job and do I need special tools? How much would this repair cost and is there any other things I should get replaced while I am getting this work done?

" Ww2bar;yes by now you need to replace shift dog and reverse gear, and you need to find out why it failed, controls worn, cables worn-out? have you been "granny-shifting"? There is a reason for this problem and it needs to be found and repaired or you will be doing the repair again. yes special tools required.Zeke "
