" The alternator on an outboard looks nothing like one on a car. The stator is under the flywheel , the magnets are on the flywheel.No belts or bearings to worry about.Has been this way since the early 60's. "

Nigel;The alternator on that engine doesn't charge the battery it only maintains the battery.the output is 6amp or 9amp if engine came from factory with power tilt/trim so it was never intended to charge your battery.Zeke
