" I have a 1989 90hp Johnson which has always run great. While flushing the engine in the driveway with the cowling off, I noted that the 2 port (left) cylinders are significantly warmer than the starboard two. You can barely keep your finger on the back of the cylinders (where the spark plugs are) on the port ones where the ones on the right are barely warm. The temperature sensor is connected to one of the hotter running cylinders and always shows normal operating range. Does anyone know if this difference between the two sides is normal? "

Thank you for your replies.

Thank you for your replies. I guess my next question would be- Should I do anything about it?

"Ron..... When the engine is running, the extreme heat generated causes a distortion of the pistons/cylinders. The heated water (thermostat temperture) compensates for that distortion. Without the heated water, you run the risk of scoring the pistons.

Bottom line = correct the thermostat problem.
