"The engine cranks real strong

"The engine cranks real strong for about 1.5 seconds, then it stalls like it is trying to run backwards. Release the key, tray again, it does the same thing. Some times it pops like a backfire through the intake. Where do I start? Any ideas what could be causing this?"

"Pull the lanyard from the safety switch before doing any other testing. Have you tried cranking with no spark plugs? Check the oil level on the dipstick- is it too high? Is it milky? What happened immediately before this started happening? More info is needed, really. Service history, recent changes or problems, parts replaced and why.

Pull the plugs, crank it and see if water comes out of the plug holes."

Jim is right about needing more info. Year of the boat engine and service and repair history can help make diagnosing on-line alot easier.

Worn plug wires can cause the wires to crossfire to each other causing the backfire during another cylinder's intake stroke with the intake valve open. That misfire could be contributing to the stalling. Has the battery been fully charged and load tested?
