" Hi guys,

I have a Chrysler 20hp electric start outboard. It's model #204hd (early
'70s). It's in excellent shape, but I need to adjust the carb (manf. by
Tillotson model md149a). Could you describe where the adjustment screws are located and
whether clockwise adjustment leans or richens.

Thanks,

"Randall,

That is a 1972 model, and I don't have any pictures of that carb, but I think that the idle mixture is on the front of the carb, just above the bore.

If it is there you can turn it clockwise until you feel that it is lightly seated. Then back it out 2 1/2 turns. Start the engine and with the engine idling you can try to lean the mixture by turning the screw clockwise 1/8 turn. This will probably cause the idle to speed up a bit. You may find that you can continue leaning the mixture even more. When you have gone too far, the engine will begin to run rough, or sputter. You can then back the screw out 1/4 turn from that point.

If the screw is not at that location, try looking towards the rear of the carb, on the side (probably the starboard side). The idle mixture screw always has a spring aroung the shaft, so it is easy to identify.
