"David.... Although the physical appearances of the various ignition components have changed, the basic ignition system is the same as the "Magneto Capacitance Discharge" ignition system that was designed and incorporated in many of the 1973 OMC outboard engines.

At that time, and up through the years (until at some point in the later 1990s) the s/plug gap was .040 . As you have probably read somewhere, the s/plug gap designated for your engine is .030 .

Initially I would leave the gap at .030 . If you should notice that something is not quite right pertaining to the ignition/power/whatever, increase the gap to .040 if for no other reason to see if that corrects the problem. If it does, leave the gap at .040 . If not, return the gap to .030 and trouble shoot to find the cause of the problem.

Note that leaving the gap at .040 will not cause your engine any harm.
