" How much water, if any, should be coming from the exhaust on the engine. New to outboard engines but seems to be excessive amount of spray from exhaust making oily film spots really evident on the water behind the engine. Water pump is working as water coming from the water pump indicator. "

" Tom: The holes on the back of the "leg" under the powerhead are for exhaust relief. The function is to reduce back pressure on the engine at lower speeds. A lot of water should come out of these holes at high speed (your motor is pumping a lot more water). I believe the "dump" from the cylinder head cooling goes out of those holes on that particular engine. Make sure that your thermostats are not stuck open. The cylinder heads (top) should be 135-140-degrees F at idle. Borrow an infrared heat gun and while standing above the engine looking down on it, point the gun at the top of each cylinder head. If they are more than twenty-five degrees cooler that the aforementioned temperatures, your thermostats are stuck open. Could lead to rough idle, plug fouling, head gasket problems. Good luck. "
