" Hi, I am at my wits end on this one. My 73 18 horse evinrude has the following symptoms:
Starts and runs great.
After running for a bit, either at idle, full throttle or anything in between, it increases RPM and dies.
If I pump the fuel bulb, it settles back down to normal.

Here is what I have done:
Replaced two tanks, hoses and primer bulb assemblies.
Replaced coils.
Replaced fuel pump.
Carb rebuilt including float.

Where do I go next? Thanks for any help. "

"Al.... In pumping the fuel primer bulb, you are in essence acting as the fuel pump. This indicates that the present fuel pump, although it has been replaced, is not operating. It's always possible that the replacement pump is faulty.

There is a small but thick gasket that goes between the fuel pump and the powerhead. That gasket must absolutely be there.... is it? Was the replacement fuel pump new or rebuilt? If rebuilt, return it and purchase a new one. Check to be sure that pressure/vacuum exists at the fuel pump port (hole) at the powerhead when cranking the engine over.
