Need to replace the gimbal rin

Need to replace the gimbal ring and upper swivel shaft on my 1990 4.3 Merc Alpha One. I have the serial number but apparently the shaft can be a square to square or a square to spline. Does anyone know how I could determine this before taking it apart?

your is most likely square on

your is most likely square on square inside the boat in back of the engine your steeing hooks to a piviot arm( black arm about 4-5 inch look through the transom cutt out) see if it has splines or square . you should dissasemble first then gather parts many changes done then you are in for a job in the end you want the square not splined . there are also a couple of options on replacement. mercruiser makes a plug kit that you can get access to that nut . you must get access kit before you drill any holes

if it is square to spine you must stay that way the spline end is where the steeing arm end . should be able to see with flashlight if it has splines or not looking through the cut out mentiond above
