"Well my 1973 chrysler 318 with about 300hrs has water in the oil. It all started when my intake started to leak so I replaced those gaskets and changed the oil. since then I have changed the oil twice and run the boat up the delta at operating temp. It doesnt overheat or miss and runs very good. what could it be, I will do a compression check as soon as possible. but what else could it be?

thanks, will"

"I'll bet the intake is still leaking.

Were the heads/ block planned at some time? If so, the intake might need to be cut as well, so the ports line up better.

Jeff"

"Not sure about them being planned or not. how would I be able to tell?
thanks, will"

"Well, if she's running ok

"Well, if she's running okay now, possibly the gaskets just weren't installed, or the intake installed correctly. Good luck!

Jeff

PS: If you start to hear an exhaust leak near your carb, get back to me."

"theres no exhaust leak at the crossover but Im going to pull the intake anyways to see if that is were the leak is.

thanks for the help, will"

"Well I pulled the intake and

"Well I pulled the intake and that had no signs of leaking.
Then I pulled the spark plugs and cranked the engine, the two rear cylinders on the right bank had waterin them. One was at 135psi the other was at 140psi.
All others were between 125 and 150.
I think may be the exhaust manifold putting water in through an exhaust valve, does this sound right?
Where can I get new manifolds and elbows?

thanks, will"

"Will,

We sell elbows and manifolds here and the next page.

Also see the next page link at the top of those pages.

Hopefully FastJeff or someone else can answer you other questions."

"It pulled the manifolds yeste

"It pulled the manifolds yesterday they were in bad shape im gonna replace those the risers and the elbows. Unfortunately 5 manifold bolts broke of into the heads so I also removed the cylinder heads. I am still contemplating weather or not to have a valve job done while I have them off what do you think?

thanks, will"

"Blast! Wish I knew you were g

"Blast! Wish I knew you were going to pull the manifolds, for I would have advised you on how to avoid breaking off those head bolts.

Jeff

PS: Be sure to use those tiny metal plates in hte gasket kit when you put the intake manifolds back on. They are essential to prevent an exhaust leak."

"well I got the heads back fro

"well I got the heads back from the machine shop one of the heads was cracked and the other needs new valves guides and seats. so I went to the salvage yard and got some 318 heads from another 73 and I will drop those off at the shop on monday to be checked out.

jeff I am not familiar with the tiny metal plates for the intake manifold. I actually just used car intake gaskets and when I pulled the manifold again there were no signs of water leaks and there were not any exhaust leaks either.

thanks, will
p.s. how would you have gotten the manifold bolts out I need to know for next time."

"Will:

The metal plates go

"Will:

The metal plates go where the exhaust crossed over in the intake manifold.

To remove the manifolds without snapping the bolts off in the head, you drill or grind the heads off the bolts, pull the manifolds off, and remove the bolt shank with ViseGrips.

Jeff

PS: I have a perfect set of 318 heads for sale, ready for installation. $100 plus shipping (from eastern PA). Interested?"

"If these heads dont work out

"If these heads dont work out I will definately take you up on that offer. thanks for the consideration.

That is how I ended up removing the ones that rounded too badly to get a good enough grab to break!

thanks for the help, i will keep you posted, will"
