No reverse on Merc 115hp 1977

" When I put it in reverse nothing happens, sometimes it clunks, grinds but nothing mostly. When it is in the drive and I put it in reverse it does not turn in one direction and turns in the other (the direction is reversed for forward) as the book says. When I test run it it seems to go into reverse when I have the flusher on, but not when at the dock and in the water. I could use any advice. Thanks "

" it sounds like your clutch dog and reverse gear are worn out. Probably came from streched or misadjusted shift cable over the years. Check your gear oil first for water or metalllic material. Could be expensive fix if reverse gear and clutch dog are worn. Email me, I havce a couple very good and rebuilt lower units, if interested. "
 
first i would take the shift

first i would take the shift cable lose and put the motor into reverse by hand while it is in the water if this works just adjust the cable. if not you have worn gears
