" I currently own a 62 14&#39

" I currently own a 62 14' cutter jet deville. The 4ohp johnson on it does not sufficiently keep the boat on plane. I would like to put a higher hp motor on it. I can only find 50 hp short shafts, none higher. How much difference would a 50 hp make? Also, what year did they change the way they listed hp on the motors? Thanks, John "

" I'm not sure if this is

" I'm not sure if this is enough info to help you but I'll pass it along.

In the early 70's, my uncle and my father owned identicle 14' crestliner fibreglass boats. My uncles had a 40 h.p. johnson on it. It was the large twin with the early prop design with no exhaust through the hub.

My dads was a 50 hp evinrude with through hub exhaust so a bit more modern.

The difference was great in this case. The 40 would pull skiers on 2 skis but not slalom. The 50 would easily pull us out of deep water starts on one ski. The top speed difference was likely only 4 or 5 miles per hour, but the difference in getting out of the hole was everything.

These were very light boats so your mileage may vary. "
