"I'll go for one out of four..... 1) the letters probably stand for Right Advance and Left Advance, referring to the rotation of each engine and which side of the timing mark represents advance and retard.

Can't give you the exact answer to 3) but a good NAPA store should have a plug cross-reference chart that includes discontinued numbers. If not, they surely will have a recommended plug list for the 283. Bring an old plug and compare them at the parts desk.

I found that each mark was 1 d

I found that each mark was 1 deg and there is a small line that is 24deg before the drill mark if this is corect then the drill mark would be total time.
Take a good look at the flywheel or you wont see the tool marks.
