1975 Evinrude 115 hp Help its slipping Joe

Nice for us do it ourselfers even if we do it wrong.

Heading for the dock 3/4 mile away boat started slipping in lower end kinda jumpy at the dock and
then nothing.
I checked and drained the full oil which was milky.
On the magnetic plug there was shavings of metal.
I aint to smart but, something cant be good.

Question is. Should I look for parts to rebuild
what are the main parts that go out down there.
Or would it be cheaper to shop for used lower end.
From what i read im thinking 1973 to 1977 lower end from 85 - 135 hp. would be what i need .
With the hydromrchanical shft.
Hope someone has been here and can help me to a good solution.

"Brett.... The Yearly interchange (73-77) and hp range is okay. The choice to repair or replace is your judgement call though. I would tear the unit down, if for no other reason, to see what went wrong. A estimate of repair could then be made, and a decision made from that point.

Thats why I asked I guess.
Right now I cant do that.
I STILL HAVE A 15 H.P. Evinrude.
Ya see the fishing here is so good.
Take my food or my wife. But not my trolling.
About Nov 30th. I can do that .
Or would it be ok to have 115 evinrude with
out lower end attached in water. It is hooked to the 15 hp for steering.
And really dont want to take it off anyhow.

I took the lower end off and got all apart to the 2 c/clips inside the prop area.
Took to the local garage they had nothing to get
em out either .
Just wonder is there a place to buy this special tool.
Maybe I will have to head to the big city and go to a boat shop.

"Brett.... You just need large Tru Arc snap ring pliers which should be available at any automotive parts type store, tool store/outlet, Matco Tool Co, NAPA etc. Also Snap On Corp if you want to pay out big bucks!

Well we got it apart , what happened for some reason was the gear at the main shaft going down split/cracked metal from it ruined lower shart all gears. and eventually the gear no longer woulds grab at all, thus the slipping.
LOTS of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I won a bid on ebay got a lower end coming.
week or so hopefully.

NOTICE !!!!!! Looking for control box for 1975 evinrude 115hp. Broken plastic gear in mine.
Or looking for outlet to buy gear !!!!!!!!

Also need 2 gears that are at elbow on throttle handle on a 1979 Evinrude 15 hp. troller.
