I have a sailboat w/ an '

I have a sailboat w/ an '82-88 Honda 7.5 OB. I'd like to connect the alterator/generator to the batteries for charging purposes. The local dealer said just run wires straight to the batteries. Wouldn't that create a discharge problem when the OB wasn't running (the alt./gen. being a short or load on the batteries)? What about an overcharging problem without a regulator of some kind? Any advice or schematic would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If your engine has a plug connector for connection to the batteries, you can follow your dealer's advice. In fact, it is advisable that such an engine should always be connected to a battery when running.
