25hp Mariner Bigfoot only running on high throttle

Hi guys,
just wondering if you could help, I have a 25hp mariner Bigfoot 4stroke engine that I am trying to repair myself to try and save a bit of money as I'm a student. It starts up but only runs when the fast idle lever is lifted high or when the throttle is high, otherwise when these are lowered and rpms come down and the engine will cut out. So far I've replaced the oil filter, adjusted the throttle cables, cleaned out the carb, resealed the fuel pump gaskets, made sure the air inlet is open on the fuel tank but none have improved how she runs. She doesn't seem to pick up when priming the bulb which makes me think it may not be a fuel delivery problem.
I am completely out of ideas now, any help would be very much appreciated!

Do not know if a four stroke operates the same as two strokes but my engine was doing the same thing and was the stator.

Thanks for the response mate, much appreciated, just out of interest, did you have to replace the stator mayor or was it an easy fix?

Not hard, just tedious; I bought a flywheel holder and breaker bar to loosen the flywheel nut; flywheel puller, and new stator; see http://www.marineengine.com/boat-fo...68-Yet-Another-Merc-40-2-Stroke-With-No-Spark
