Honda BF90A Starter Problem.

On the lake. Engine had been running for about an hour. Slowed down and idling for about 10 minutes when the engine started smoking. Removed the cover and the wire from the starter relay to the starter had gotten hot enough to melt the insulation. (Short wire) Starter doesn't work at all now. Realize I must replace the starter but wondering how this could have happened.
 
You should check to be sure that the starter solinoid is not locked in the "start" position.

It sounds like the starter may have been still engaged as the motor was running or you were cranking the motor too long to start the engine.

If it is the case of the starter staying engaged and the starter solenoid is operating ok, then check to be sure that the key switch is not stuck in the start position or is not shorted internally, applying voltage to the start lead. The start lead is the black/white lead.
