Sensory Nipple

Hey fellas, been working on changing out the water pump unit and noticed my sensory nipple wasn't connected to anything. The hose is cut off at the head of the nipple. What does this do? Does it send an alarm to the engine and what is the hose supposed to connect to? Thanks

What engine do you have?

Most likely, you are looking at the speedo pickup nipple/hose. Normally, located at the front of the lower unit, the hose attaches to it and runs up to a speedometer. There is a very small hole on the lower front of your lower unit, which senses water pressure at you move and the pressure travels up through the lower unit through the nipple and hose to the speedometer.

I might add to Mike's explanation that often owners (like me) get frustrated with that little hole getting plugged up so often, so they cut and plug the tube that comes from it and install an external pitot on the transom and connect the hose to the speedometer to that.
