My 2003, 3.3 2 stroke, with low hours has run like a champ. Recently I started it and the running sound was different. I had changed the impeller 3 months before this, as the engine had stood for roughly 8 years. No issues, good water flow. The sound change bothered me so I removed the lower unit again and I found a broken plastic part around the shift and cooling pipe, photo attached. This part has obviously been rubbing on the drive shaft. On restarting the engine the noise has gone and all runs well. What is this part as I can't see where it comes from when looking up the leg with a flash light. Is it an exhaust deflector? If so where does it attach to? Thanks for any guidance on this.
