Mercury 7 1/2 hp won't go into reverse

I have a Mercury 7 1/2 hp serial number that won't go into reverse
Forward and neutral are fine.
Any suggestions or fixes?

If it's an older one (60 to 80s) then the LU was put back on with the shifter misaligned--very easy to do.
