Pedestal Seat Problem, Please help

1984 Ranger pedestal seat/butt seat broken handle. can't stick back in. I have an extra adjustable post. Broken post has an extension that is probably pressed on. Want to take off extension tube and put it on the extra adjustable "gas" post. Old post says "Do Not Open" on it. Want to cut, twist, hammer to get extension off. What is the danger? Spring will fly out, gas, explosion? How to proceed?

What I call the extension is on the bottom half, the upper half is the power piston part and has a square plate with 4 screws into wooden seat bottom. I can look thru the bottom extension tube and see the bottom of the power piston tube inside the extension tube. Don't see any attachment, so assume pressed in about 5". I will commence taking part once I know what the "danger" is. New extension pedestals have pin lock, lever lock and are the wrong diameter for my built in base. If there is just a spring in there, I can keep it contained while I vice it up and twist on tube...heat the extension.
