Johnson evinrude 50hp engine continuous running problem

Our Johnson evinrude 50hp 1989 model bass tracker engine has had some problems lately. It will start on occasion but will not run on river.. We have had it running everytime when hooked up to the waterhouse at the house but when we take it to the river, it either won't run or won't start back after a short drive upstream. Does anybody know of a solution?
 
HI, you posted in the wrong section. That said, start with a compression test. Do you have a bucket or barrel you can run it in instead of the muffs?

What tab do I need to be under? And yes we did put it into a barrel and it did fine that way.. It just struggles once we get it on the river. Occasionally it will start and go up the river but after it sits for a few minutes, it wot start back.. The last couple times we had it out, it wouldn't even start.. It will turn over but won't hit.
