I have a Mercury 90 and it won't go into forward gear. I moved the shifter into reverse and then moved it quickly into forward and it worked. Other times I have moved it backwards and forward until it engaged in forward. Also at other times, it hasn't gone into any gear no matter how many times I moved it. There is a button on the shifter so that you can rev the engine, could the problem be this button not popping out or engaging(Its a Quicksilver 3000)? Or could it be the cables? Any help/ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

If button was sticking it wold not engage reverse when you do this.... sounds like a cable problem.

It's either bad cable adjustment, or the LU shifter splines and the top shifter are not in the correct alignment (which often happens after an impeller change).
