Mercury 07 60hp elpt efi 4 stroke shift shaft question?

Hi i had to pull my prop shaft after i bent it.. i was wondering if anyone knew,, when putting it back together,,, when u drop ur shift shaft through the key that does the shifting is neutral have the key sitting flush with the shaft.. i would think it has to be but just wanted to see if by chance somone has delt with this lower unit and shift shaft key.. its hard to explaine so if that made no sense to you and u have done this motor and sti dont get it l try to get pics.. thanks
