Hard shifting 60hp Mercury

Hey guys,

I've got a 60hp 2001 mercury that is bloody hard to shift into both forward and reverse, it was like that when we got the boat. I've taken the control arms off the linkages in the powerhead to see if it was the cables running to the engine but they shift smooth. I've had the lower unit off and tried move the throttle in and out of reverse and it is hard as hell. this has lead me to believe its the shaft running from the power head down to the lower unit. Is there any way to take out the shifting shaft that runs down from the power head and/or lubricate it? If anyone has any tips or advice it would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Shannon

Ayuh,.... When the lower unit was off, did ya unhook the cables at the motor, 'n manually try movin' the motor's controls, from the cable attachment point,..??

How 'bout the motor's throttle linkages,..??

I believe the powerhead has to come off, to remove the shift rod,....

probably get a faster reply posting in the Mercury Outboard section...when i worked at the shop, we always removed and reinstalled the outboard gear cases with the controls in FWD...
