I'm considering buying a pontoon boat. The boat is a 1983 but has been completely rebuilt from the deck up. It is on a trailer that is one year old and has only been in the water once. The problem is that the motor is a 1983 Mercury Mariner outboard. The seller said the engine runs but it coughs and sputters. He had the carbs rebuilt last year as well as new wire harness installed. What could be wrong with the engine and roughly how much would it cost to fix?
