Mercury Classic Fifty Outboard 45 Year???

Hi all -- I have a Mercury Classic Fifty that seems to have the serial # plate missing off of the transom mount. Is there any way to tell the year of the motor? Any differences in these that I could check out?

They are pretty much exactly the same. They changed it to the 40 hp after that but the basic engine stayed the same they changed the cowling to a one piece but other than that was the same till the mid 90's
 
Thats the old 50 that i think merc tried to get away from and the public demanded it so they came out with it again and called it the Classic...fine engine ...i owned two of the old 50,s and should never gotten rid of them...gas hog but reliable....there was a wiring deterioration problem early in them but other wise fine..
