Need to match old merc 115 rotted wire color and gauge?

I have an old 115 merc and the wiring is rotted. I know this is a common problem, but don't understand why. I want to replace the wiring but don't know where I can match the color and gauge of the wire. I just like to keep it simple so I can easily refer to a wiring schematic, and If I sell it I would want the new owner to feel confident in repairs that were done on it............thanks
 
Been there and done that..if i had to do it again i would buy a wiring harness from ebay or iboats...plenty of hits on the web for the harness if you go that route...good luck...merc put out some really crappy wiring for years so you are not alone...
 
Get a factory harness with the appropriately colored wires...its the only way to go if you want to sell it in the future...not only are the colors important but you will find the copper under the insulation is not readily available at your favorite big box store...
