1986 Mariner 2 stoke 55hp outboard help needed

Hi all

We recently bought a boat with the above engine which needed some work, we have refurbed the boat but are now having engine issues. One of which has us stumped, the engine is only putting 12.5 volts back into the battery so we are not keeping any charge in the battery.

The guy we bought the boat from said that he recalls a third cable that runs from somewhere on the outboard back to one of the terminals on the battery but his not sure where it came from or which termainal it went on.

Can any one help please​
 
The voltage stays at 12.5 vdc? It doesn't climb to 14.8 vdc at WOT? I would suspect the voltage regulator has an open diode or the stator is not putting out 100%.
 
I have the same outboard and it only has the two fairly thick cables running indirectly to the battery (I installed an isolation switch) There is no third wire/cable/etc. From the advice above I'd be looking at testing the voltage regulator and stator.
