Johnson 4 Seahorse abrupt stop, overheated?

The engine wasn't operated for 2 years. It started well, with correct fuel/oil mix, ran at full speed for 10 minutes, suddenly stopped. Strong paint smell. Couldn't turn over to restart. Waited 4 hours, able to pull starter cord, prop turns ok, won't start. Grateful for any advice.

Just a few bolts to remove the lower unit to inspect the water pump.----It amazes me every day that folks do not do any maintenance on these fine pieces of machinery.-----I suppose labour rates of up to $100.00 / hr have something to do with it.

Could be overheated from failed water pump or a stuck thermostat.

Cooked paint smell should mean the points condensor, ignition coils, paint cooked.

As racerone said. Pump ? Worse ? The water impellor pieces are up inside the water supply tube.

Or all of above........You have a few things to check out for sure.

Take the spark plugs out . Put the plugs into the plug H V connectors & tape / string the plugs to a GOOD BARE METAL ground.

When it is fully dark outside. Yank the engine over & see if both plugs have a nice thin blue arc at the plug gaps. No spark ? By a new plug & do the tests again. Old plugs may be fuel soaked & smother the arc........If the coils are blue arcs.
Then do Racerones water pump repair. ....IF any parts of a impellor blade are missing. You MUST find them.

NEVER blow any air UP THE water supply tube to the motor........That can jam the pieces in really tight.
