Trim guage sender 1983

Hi, does anyone know how a trim guage sender works on a 1983 DT115? It doesn't seem to be a simple potentiometer, it has 4 wires and a pot would have 3 wires. I am trying to test it since my guage does not work. Also, my guage is a yamaha guage, not sure if the guage and sender can be used together, anyone know? The sender has orange, black, green and pink. The guage has orange, pink, grey and black in one bunch, and black, blue and yellow in another bunch. Thanks for any help.
 
Never mind, I came right, if anyone ever needs to do this, here is the setup: pink to pink, orange to orange and black to black. The green goes to the grey. Then on the meter the yellow is 12V and the black is ground, the blue is for the back up light.
