Checking for Short in an Armature

I have picked up another belt driven generator for my 40 Big Twin and when I hooked it up to have it spin like a motor, it arced. I put the positive to the A terminal and went to ground it on the generator frame, and it arced and it should not have. Putting the ohm meter on the A terminal and the frame ground I don't get continuity. On the other brush that is not insulated I get continuity when touching ground, the field checks out fine, no shorts there at all. What is the best way for a simple check of the armature for a short? Thanks for all replies.
