90hp Suzuki will always go into reverse but not forward

On a trip last weekend I had two things that might have contributed to the problem. When I put it in forward sometimes the engine will just rev. I put it in reverse just fine then try forward and repeat until forward works. Sometime going forward will make it reverse faster ans sometimes when I go to neutral it stays in reverse. Possible causes1 had really heavy people on board so we were over weight taking on water the whole trip. Maybe the saltwater locked up the shifter cable? 2 put the motor in forward when the prop was in mud. Maybe something snapped. Checked the wheel and I have no spin when in gear so I think the hub is ok. So if anyone has any ideas or jabs that we took on water I would be thankful
