Yep, that'll do it.... BUT it doesn't go to the plug, it connects to the wire that goes to the plug which I feel sure you're aware of that... just the way you have it worded.

yep, not the best drawing. any idea how i can get the wire on the tester to connect to the plug boot on the motor? thats the only part i cant figure out....
 
im no electrician and i took the idea from a earlier post. what i dont get is how can the plug be tested if its not connected to the tester? or will this just verify that i have good spark coming from my ignition?
 
You can just strip of about 3/4 inch off the end of the wire fold it over to push in the spark plug connectors it just has to make contact and crimp a alligator clip on the end of the other wire. The shorter the wires the more accurate the gap test is. You can also leave the staples a little loose so you can adjust the gap.
