Yep, that'll do it.... BUT it doesn't go to the plug, it connects to the wire that goes to the plug which I feel sure you're aware of that... just the way you have it worded.
The spark plug cannot be part of the equation.
so is this not for testing the plugs?
You are checking the strength of the coil discharge, Not the plugs. If the plugs are included your readings will not be accurate.
You can just strip of about 3/4 inch off the end of the wire fold it over to push in the spark plug connectors it just has to make contact and crimp a alligator clip on the end of the other wire. The shorter the wires the more accurate the gap test is. You can also leave the staples a little loose so you can adjust the gap.
