1983 johnson 9.9 lower unit shift rod replace long to short, take it all apart?

1983 johnson 9.9/15 sailmaster. i want to change the shift lever from the long to a short. can i just unscrew the shift rod from the top of the lu? or will it be all bad to try this? never took apart a lower unit yet, and i dont really want to :) if i can just unscrew one shifter, and stick the shorter one in the hole and hopefully screw it back in?

thanks. i didnt want to unthread the shaft and then... not be able to stick in the new shaft. kinda like when someone unscrews the wrong screw on the lu and wonders why it wont shift.
