83 9.9 what do you use to clean old gasket off of parts?

i have a 83, 9.9 that i plan on installing all new gaskets. i bought a box o parts for a few bucks. how or what do you use to clean off the old gaskets?
i have tried the soak in pinesol thing, and i live in california so there is no good gasket remover available. so now what? i have carefully removed as much old material as possible, but would like to know if there is a solevent i can use?

this may sound silly.........use oven cleaner. then use brake clean on the final clean up. trust me on this one !! (i get the lemon scented)
 
Might want to test the cleaner on aluminum first. Aluminum can be attacked by caustic cleaners. Might try acetone or paint thinner.
