Hello all,
Brand new here and seeking help. I have a friend that has the above motor that got swamped last year on the back of his canoe. The motor will run, but only when full choke is applied. When he opens the drain plug he gets no fuel flow Does anyone have a link for how to disassemble the carb, or even how to get at it?
Thanks

Your serial number does not come up in any series that I have. So I can not identify the year or model.

Make sure the number you listed is correct and repost. If you are not in the USA, then the number may be valid, but not accessible in any data base that I can see.

Thanks Mike....engine was bought in Canada....that's probably the problem:) Thanks for the help tho...any other ideas would be appreciated....don't really want to buy the shop manual if I don't have to.

Just trying to zero in on what model it is.... could the serial number be BAES instead of BAFS?

Also, is the throttle a slide button on the front of the engine or is it on the tiller handle via a twist grip?

I am just guessing...if the numerical part of the serial number is correct, then the motor may be a 1990 or a 2001. The throttle position will help solve the puzzle.

Then I can at least try to tell you how to take it apart. I do not know of any links that show you how.

Hi Mike....yes....my bad....I checked and the correct number is BAES..mistook the E for an F....old age and poor eyesight :)
The numerals are correct, and the throttle is on a slide button on the front of the engine.
Sorry for the mix up.
Thanks

Your model should then be a BF2AM. Made between 1990 and 1997.

Taking these little ones apart are like peeling an onion. The service manual is not perfectly clear. But here goes...

This is following the disassembly chart.

Remove engine cover

Remove Recoil starter http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/1997/BF2AM SA /RECOIL STARTER (2)/parts.html

Remove fuel tank. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/1997/BF2AM SA /FUEL TANK/parts.html

Remove throttle cable and choke cable rod from carburetor

Remove fan cover part # 7 http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/1997/BF2AM SA /FAN COVER/parts.html

Remove carburetor. Part # 9 http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/1997/BF2AM SA /CARBURETOR/parts.html

Once you get through all that, you will have to completely disassemble the carburetor and thoroughly clean. I found a video on youtube that will give you an idea of how to take the carb apart and clean it. The carb in the video is very similar to the one on the 2 HP. It is a nice clean carb to begin with and it is kind of a dry video, but may help. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3S_7XpUioE

As a side note, I am sure JimmyD would do a much better job on a video than this guy!

Take lots of pictures as you are taking the motor apart so you get the hoses, cables, etc on correctly.

You may have a cap on the idle mixture screw ..part # 5 http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/1997/BF2AM SA /CARBURETOR/parts.html

They show you how to take the cap off in the video. Do not jerk it off like he does in the video. Make sure you give it a lot of time to heat up and gently pull it off or you will break the stem of the screw. Once the cap is off, turn the screw in until it lightly seats, counting the number of turns in. Write it down so you can put it back into the same position when you put it back.

It is most likely about 2 1/8 turns out.

Hope this helps.

That video wasn't bad at all! Much better than the "um, ah, um, cough, belch, laugh, um, ah" sound tracks that are so prevalent on YOU TUBE. I also liked the way he conveyed just how expensive the Honda cleaning products are by not using any:)

Mike,
Thank you so much for the information...we'll fly at it later today, and I'll let you know how it goes. Really do appreciate the help.
