45 horse Chrys runs rough. Plugs?

I have a 79 Chrysler that runs rough in spite of all I try. I know it is capable of running smooth because it did for awhile. My manual says, "use a 2 cycle marine type plug which has a short side electrode which extends only to the center of the center electrode instead of beyond as a standard automotive spark plug." My plugs are standard. Does anyone know if this is critical to smooth running?.

Alway include model and serial#s.
Profile/location?
UL 4 J standard plug.
Or SPARK PLUG (RL-4-J) FOR MODELS 456B9K, 457B9K AND 459B9H
The permagap plugs are used in a lot of outboards.
The UL I think means permagap.
The RL is a gapable plug.
Both can be used.
Your motor might run better with one or the other???
Mine uses the permagaps and never a problem.
If they get dirty, just wipe em on a rag and they are clean.

First do a compression and spark test.
Then check the fuel for water.
Clean the carb.
The plugs when they are in are they burning right?
The air/fuel screw, top and center of the carb.
Turn it in till it just bottoms out and then turn out 1 full turn.
That's the base setting.
Once the motor gets warm, turn the screw in till it bucks, kicks, stalls, coughs.
Then out 1/2 turn. That's the setting.Leave it there for best running.

Do the tests and post the results.

Thanks Jerry, I did it all, then noticed that the main ground on the rectifyer was loose. Tightened it and man, what a difference. Finally running smooth. Hey bud, I value every bit of advice you post. mm
