"Head gaskets are always high on the list, before thinking cracked block, unless you know more, such as a freeze out."

"In most cases a visual inspection will tell you. Unless they have been frozen, the leak is usually at the mating surface at the riser. By removing the riser you can inspect the surface of both the manifold and the riser. If you want to be sure, you can remount the riser using a closed system block-off plate and fresh gaskets. Plumb a radiator pressure tester to the cooling line and make sure there are no other hoses or fittings open, such as drains, shaft seal hoses etc. Pressurize the manifold and spray it with a soap solution. You should also monitor the guage for leakdown since a leak into a port may not be visible. If the guage hasn't moved in say...an hour, you're good to go. That doesn't speak for the riser, just the manifold. If the riser looks questionable, or is over 5 years old (less in salt), just replace it.

"If there is no water in the cylinders and only in the oil, the problem is not the exhaust manifolds. A defective engine oil cooler is the easiest to troubleshoot and will allow water into the oil. If you have an egine oil cooler, check it for leaks and replace if bad. Other causes may be in the block, head or intake gaskets or a corroded or cracked intake manifold. Remove the thermostat housing and inspect the intake manifold in the thermostat area for cracks or holes.

"we had one like that and went

"we had one like that and went and checked the head .cooler,manifold (intake for leaks) it was the risers on the exhaust manifold cracked inside and the water would back feed into the engine when it was shut down but not as long as it was running ,filled up the exhaust manifold ,leaked past the exhaust guides and into the oil ,very hard to find but check risers as well as manifolds.
