New guy needs some help, having some inboard motor issues with my 1989 mercruiser 5.7l ski motor
Hi, I just bought my first boat and I am having some issues. I have a 1989 Dixie 299 with a Mercruiser 5.7l ski inboard. My transmission cooling assembly was leaking raw water into the bilge so I took it off, patched it and reinstalled. When I went to take it out the patch held but the cooler assembly is now very warm to the touch. When it leaked water it was generally cool to the touch. Is this normal? Also, after warming up I pulled a skier around for about 10 minutes, the motor ran fine until I powered off and came around to get my skier. It bogged down and stalled, that is when I noticed the transmission cooler assembly was warm. But I believe the stall wAs due to a flooded carb. The engine compartment smelled like gas and I could see some over flow on the manifold. If any of this makes sense to you please pass on some info. ARE THEY CONNECTED? Or is it just bad luck?

No, they're not related, 'n ya gotta fix the gas leak, BEFORE you even start that motor again....

'n, Yes, if the cooler is workin', I'd expect it to be warm...

Ok, here's an update, the issue is the carburetor. At idle gas is poring into the intake. I had my mechanic take the Carb apart and cleaned the hell out of it. . I took it out today and its idling better. It throttles up fine but still bogs down after a run. I'm starting to think I just need to rebuild or replace it. Are there any after market carbs out there that can replace the Rochester quadrajet? If not, is there a common site that everyone gets their rebuild kits?

no need to replace the Rochester. if you had somebody take the carb apart without replacing the gaskets, you need to find somebody else to rebuild it - bad practice.

I'd check the float, needle and seat if it gets the air horn removed again.

is the fuel "pouring into the intake" from just one of the primary bores (the one on the same side as the choke housing)? if so, it is more likely to be a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm than a carb issue.

based on your response, I'd say you need a new fuel pump and a new mechanic, at least when it comes to carb work.

you can verify the fuel pump is leaking by checking the sight tube...originally, it is the bright yellow, pliable TYGON tube connecting the pump to the carb (usually running parallel to the stell supply line) but usually age into a dark brown, inflexible cylinder.

I agree a new mechanic is needed.Your not alone.I 've seen a record high of people this year with carb problems after they rebuild their carbs.I see this all the time,"Help,I don't know why my boat won't idle, leaks fuel, poor starting?".
It's not the carb. It's the mechanic. As for carbs I find that Holly or edelbrock is the best & most simple to work on.Then a Rochester or a qd-jet carb. That's just my findings.
(dumping on one primary but now its dumping in from both sides)Gasget is broke.
