Timing at Idle

Just out of curiousity, what should the idle timing be for a 1980 115 Johnson? Mine is right at TDC.

At idle the throttle plates are closed.-----------Then idle speed is controlled by retarding the timing.--Thus the further it is retarded is an indication of engine condition.--------------------Throttle pick up is the critical issue here.

Throttle pick up is coming in a bit late. It's at 8 degrees, manual spec's out 4 to 6 degrees. I will re-set that to about 5 degrees, after I swap the carbs. Motor doesn't like to idle....coughs, spits out the exhaust, stalls. It's better when it's warmed up, but not much. I think part of that may be a worn top carb. (throttle shaft letting in excess air). Compression is 3 @ 130 psi, 1 @ 125 psi.
