My 1998 johnson started knocking in the gearcase this past weekend, I pulled both magnetic drain plugs and they had a lot of metal particles and the oil was grayish, it only makes the knocking noise in forward, reverse makes no abnormal noises, I found a service manual online, by the looks of things removing the botten end involves removing the waterpump set screw in the side and the 5 bolts and the shifter screw under the engine and pull it out?
is this a common failure on this motor, I'd like to remove the bottom end myself on the boat ramp as putting the boat on a trailer is a huge hassle, if anyone has done this before what is the average cost I should be expecting
