water pump impeller

I have a 1964 evinrude sportwin 9.5. Runs fine, but just wondering about the water pump. stream is good but should the impeller be replaced or leave well enough alone? I don't believe it has ever been replaced since it was born.
 
Impellers should be replaced on a regular basis !!-----------There is no warning " system " on your motor.-----If the impeller were to fail you would basically ruin the motor.---If it is original it is way overdue and ready to fail !
 
As racerone said. Impellers need to be replaced when they are working just fine since the alternative, if you wait until it is actually needed, is an overheated motor. I doubt it is the original impeller unless it hasn't been used since 1970. Most will say an impeller should be changed every 3 years but I usually go for about 5 years. In any event if you don't know how long its been then you should change it.
