1979 Johnson 115 hp alarm sound?

I have been taking this boat out and it seems like it starts to over heat. Some caution alarm goes off right next to the driver where the throttle lever is at. Basically sounds like a horn when it goes off. The motor is spitting water like it should to cool it but it still starts to smoke and will end up killing itself, and the alarm will go off just before or soon after. It wont start until it seems to cool off. any advice?
 
That alarm is a serious matter !!--------If you have been running it repeatedly with the alarm going off it may be too late.------------You need to do a compression test and post the results.
