Johnson V4 Crossflow thermostat assembly. Did I put it together correctly.

Hi Guys.

I assembled the thermostat housing and related items yesterday, but since it "fell out" when i originaly removed it, I am not sure if i put it together correctly.

my manual doesn't give a very good explination on this. Below is a picture of the assembly using all the tips on this forum prior to assembly. Any help greatly appreciated. thanks.

The 2 white plastic pieces ( relief valves ) ----the short end of them sticks out.

looking at the picture , I have assembled mine as well today . I notice the cork seals sitting in the recesses that the 2 stats sit on, seem to stand out quite a bit , so when I put the gasket over it, it does not seem to sit flush onto the plastic. .
1.Is that normal for a new cork seal to sit out like that and do I just have to tighten the 3 bolts until the gasket is flush with the surface?
2. Do i use permatex aviation on both sides of the gasket ie onto the plastic housing as well as onto the metal surface of motor side
