BPR Online parts said I need impeller 386165 for my 1975 Evinrude 40hp, Model 40555C,
so that's what I ordered, and it's about 1/4" thinner than the old one. The old one is about 3/4"
thick, and the new one is only 1/2" thick.
What impeller do I need? Help!
Thanks, Tom

The proper part number is 386165 for a 1975 40hp Evinrude Model 40555C impeller.

When you say "thick", are you actually speaking about the height of the impeller blades?

Could you possibly be mistaken about the model number of the engine?

The earlier model 40hp Evinrude/Johnson engines (1960 thru about 1972 I think) DID have a impeller that was larger in height which was part number 377230 but that number has been superseded up to 0777213.

Thanks for your answers. Yes, I'm talking about the height of the impeller.
I just went out to the garage and got the impeller housing. It's part number
325404. That was an excellent idea...... wish I thought of it!!
Will let you know what I find out. Thanks, Tom

Very seldom are part numbers imprinted upon the actual parts. In all proability the number of 325404 is simply a casting number. At any rate, it's not in the price book and it doesn't ring a bell with me.

That impeller housing.... does it have a small housing attached to the rear portion of it with 2 screws, that contains 2 grommets of which two water hoses go into it?

325404 Must be a casting number, as I did find used ones for sale, but no idea what they were from.
The housing does not have the "housing cap" as you describe, but did see that type on the
BRP Parts catalog.
I have not found a diagram that looks like mine. It's round, and is held down with three
screws. If you do a search on EBay for " 325404 " you will see my housing.
Wish I could determine for sure what impeller fits my cap.
Too tired, going to bed. Will check back tomorrow to see if
you guys have more information. Thanks!

Is your " old " pump housing plastic with a stainless liner ??-----------Possibly a newer style pump installed ??----------Here is a case where pictures of the parts would clear this up.

Yes, this impeller housing has a SS liner.

The only markings I see on the old impeller itself are....
"M"
"702"
"30"

Hopefully photo attached. Thanks again
for any help.

GO back to BRP and look up Water Pump Kit 386602 which is superseded up to 391741. I believe that the number of 391741 may also be superseded but my books only go up so far.

Kit number 386602 contains the old type aluminum impeller housing but the upgrade (supersede) brings into view the plastic housing, stainless steel insert, smaller impeller, etc. Hopefully this helps you out somewhat.

Still cannot find the number of the impeller just the kits 386602, 391741, 390381, 18-3379

I assume that you're telling me that you've found that kit number 386602/391741 supersedes again up to kit number 390381.

If so, the impeller for that kit is number 390286.

Thank you all for your help. I just called a dealer, and they measured impeller # 390286,
and it sounds like the correct part.
I'm still confused regarding if I have an original lower unit.
The BRP catalog said I need impeller 386165 (which was too thin) for my 1975, Mod. 40555C, 40 hp.,
but one auction on EBay mentions the 391741 kit (with the 390286 impeller)
for a 1975 - 1976 40 hp.
I find no numbers on the lower until at all to go by.
Thanks, Tom

Finally found a lower unit diagram of a 1983, 40 hp Evinrude, that has an impeller housing that looks like the one I have
on my 1975. It shows the 390286 impeller I need. I would have guessed I had an older lower unit, but maybe it's newer.
Glad you guys helped!

Yea, the older 40hp lower units used the 2 water tube setup and the 377230 impeller. The lower unit you have is apparently not the original but a later model. Whatever it is, keep that info on file so we don't have to go thru this again next year :D.

New impeller installed today, and it pumps water excellant now! Need to get it on the lake and make sure it shifts okay, etc.
Water pump parts information all printed off, and in my Evinrude manual!
Thanks all!
